Jemma Dorman

“The wealth of colours available from the natural world is truly remarkable!” - JD 2022

Art JD is, Jemma Dorman, artist, teacher, natural dyer and craftsperson. I design and make naturally dyed goods by hand in South Yorkshire.

My artworks are created using both plant and animal fibres then coloured with plant based natural dyes. My increased interest in self- sufficiency over the years has meant I have grown a large amount of the flowers and plants needed for my craft in my garden.

Natural dyes give textiles and artworks great opportunities for individuality of design and colour, especially as there are so many ways to modify the plant dyes.

I create works using different art mediums as a way to explore natural forms, sounds and experiences from my walks in Yorkshire and the surrounding areas. These experiences provide an abundance of inspiration for both colours and textures in my work. My handmade gifts and artwork seek to reveal layers of symbolism linked to primitive communication in nature. Symbols found in the natural world inform and inspire my work.

I also use a range of media alongside natural dyes, including but not exclusively - paint, clay, photography, fabric, collage and printmaking to create my gifts and artwork.

  • Art Commissions

Art commissions - Please consider these six steps before enquiring.

Here are six steps to consider in the commissioning process:

Subject. Determine the subject of the project, e.g., Acrylic painting, Oil painting, pencil sketch, digital print, mounted, framed? What would you like?

Terms. Once you have decided your subject and the medium. I would write up a contract of sale and communicate all terms with you during this time.

Price. I will always determine the price in advance. I ask for a non refundable 5% deposit which will be deducted from the price on completion of the commission.

Timeline. Usually it would take approx. 1 month to complete a painting however the process can be longer depending on the commission.

Artist’s rights. After sale I would retain full artist’s copyright of my image. You would not own the copyright.

I look forward to hearing from you.

  • Workshops

I provide educational workshops. Any ideas you have can be discussed and I can design the workshop specifically for your needs. A price can be arranged according to number of people, venue, resources and time needed for set up. I have 11 years experience of providing arts workshops in educational settings. In addition I am a qualified Primary teacher with a PGCE. This experience and training ensures quality educational workshops based on current teaching methods.
