Natural Dye Care
While my dyes are “fixed” and relatively permanent on fabric, there are some steps you can take to ensure your naturally dyed piece retains its colour for the future.
Washing in cold water (as infrequently as possible), preferably by hand, is recommended.
Shifts in pH can change natural dye colours dramatically, so make sure to use a gentle washing powder or liquid. Any harsh detergents, especially those containing baking soda, can strip or shift dye colours.
Keep in mind that other substances coming in contact with your naturally dyed goods can also shift or remove colours. For example, a spilled cup of tea, coffee, or juice (acidic) can have a bleaching effect on natural dyes; overly-alkaline deodorants can leave dark marks.
Never dry clean naturally dyed goods–the harsh chemicals will damage dye colours.
Always air dry out of direct sunlight.
Avoid extended UV exposure when possible. Some dyes (like tannins) can darken with light exposure, but others are susceptible to fading over time, just like synthetic dyes.
General care instructions:
Hand wash with mild washing powder in cold water (or on delicate cycle with like colours)
Do not dry clean
Air dry in the shade or tumble dry low
Limit exposure to direct sunlight for longest colour life
